Creative Closet Storage Ideas

Closets are a great place to store all manner of things. They allow us to keep everything from clothing to cleaning supplies and sports equipment close at hand without having it clutter up our lives. The only problem is that closets offer a limited amount of storage space. The good news is that there are some creative tricks you can use that allow you to maximize every single closet’s storage potential.

Hanging Multiple Rods at Differing Heights

Most of us have a single rod that spans the widths of our closets. Since this is how things have always been done, we do not think much about it. We hang clothing on the rod and place things like shoes on the closet floor. However, think about how much more clothing you could store in your closet if you hung a second rod in your closet. You could use one rod for shorter clothing items, the other for longer clothing, and still have floor space available. By adding a second rod, you have effectively doubled your closet’s storage potential.

Add Shoe Organizers to Your Closet

Many people have gotten into the habit of hanging a shoe organizer on their closet door, but there is not any reason you need to stop there. You could add a custom shoe organizer to any of your closet’s walls. Do not assume that each of these spaces must contain shoes; you can use the shoe slots for things like spare towels, children’s toys, jewelry, accessories, and more.

Add a Shelf Divider to the Top of Your Closet

Rather than merely tossing things on the shelf at the top of your closet, install some shelf dividers. This allows you to easily organize the top shelf. Not only does this make it easier to find the items you need, but also makes your closet appear tidier.

Corner Shelves Make Closets Interesting

Sometimes adding a corner shelf to your closet provides you with some additional storage space, especially if you are storing items that do not easily slide into corners, such as sporting equipment. Make sure the corner shelves are properly installed and that they are strong enough to accommodate whatever you plan to place onto them. Staggering the height of the corner shelves can add some visual appeal as well as provide you with additional storage space.

Add Hanging Baskets

There is nothing that says you must use boxes for things like gloves, hats, ties, etc. Instead of tucking these items into a box and storing it on your closet floor, attach a hanging basket to your closet rod and use it to store those things you like to get to quickly. Not only do the baskets make things easily accessible and tidy, but it also leaves the closet floor free to store other things. Hanging baskets are especially useful in mudroom closets and kids’ bedrooms.
